Pediatrics

We are strong believers in the effectiveness and the safety of vaccinations.  We believe that the evidence overwhelmingly shows the benefits of vaccines outweigh any risks.  As a community we are seeing some population changes as well as seeing more families decide to selectively vaccinate.  This lessens the strength of herd immunity – which protects those who are unable to be vaccinated or still too young to be vaccinated.

If you decide to delay or refuse vaccinations, we will require you, the parent or legal guardian, to sign the American Academy of Pediatrics Vaccination Refusal form (see form) to have on record in your child’s chart.  This form will be reviewed at each well-child appointment after any vaccination recommendations and/or changes are discussed.  **If you decide not to sign the refusal to vaccinate form, we will unfortunately be unable to see your child in our office.

Recommendations for Well Child Visits:

  • 3-5 days old
  • 2 weeks old
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • Every year thereafter around their birthday

At each well-child visit, weight, height and vital signs will be taken and growth charts are made available to you for your records.  A complete physical examination will be performed, and you will have an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns that you have regarding your child.  Recommendations will be given regarding your child’s age and appropriate milestones, etc., and vaccines will be given according to the CDC recommended schedule (birth to 6 years) (7-18 years).

If at any time you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s health, Dr. McKernan will be glad to discuss this with you.  He is also available for his established patients by phone after hours for emergencies.
